Department of History FIB UI Hosts “Bacaan Bumi: Ecological Thought for Indonesia” Book Discussion

The Department of History, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), together with Yayasan Pustaka Obor Indonesia organized a book discussion titled “Bacaan Bumi: Pemikiran Ekologis untuk Indonesia” (Reading the Earth: Ecological Thought for Indonesia). This event embodies the spirit of critical thinking and academic contribution to the nation. The discussion aims to examine the close link between environmental history and the perspective of World System Theory.

The event features two renowned experts as keynote speakers: Prof. Gerry van Klinken, an Honorary Research Fellow at KITLV Leiden, and Fathun Karib, Ph.D., a Postdoctoral Fellow under the ARI-DIJ (NUS) research partnership on Asian infrastructures. Through this collaboration, participants are invited to understand how ecological dynamics in Indonesia are inseparable from the context of global history and broader global economic-political structures.

The discussion was held on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at Auditorium IX – Benny H. Hoed, Koentjaraningrat Building, FIB UI. The session took place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. WIB. Through this forum, the Department of History of FIB UI hopes to open a space for dialogue among students, academics, and the general public to revisit ecological thought in addressing today’s environmental crisis. Participants are expected to enrich their understanding of the discourse on Indonesia’s position within the global environmental history landscape and to strengthen awareness of the importance of ecological literacy grounded in historical research.
