Department of Library and Information Science FIB UI Celebrates 73rd Anniversary with National Seminar “Community Archives: Preserving Memory through Crowdsourcing”

To celebrate its 73rd Anniversary, the Department of Library and Information Science (DIPI) of the Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), held a National Seminar themed “Community Archives: Preserving Memory through Crowdsourcing” on October 20, 2025, at the Soe Hoek Gie Auditorium, Sapardi Djoko Damono Building IX, UI Depok Campus.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Taufik Asmiyanto, S.S., M.Si., the Acting Dean of FIB UI. In his address, Dr. Taufik, who is also a lecturer at DIPI FIB UI, emphasized that this year’s seminar theme reflects the Department’s spirit in strengthening the relevance of library and information science amidst the development of digital technology and increasingly broad and inclusive community participation. The Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Dr. Nina Mayesti, S.S., S.Kom., M.Hum., stated that the 73rd anniversary is a moment to affirm DIPI’s commitment to supporting the preservation of the nation’s collective memory through cross-sector collaboration, including academics, practitioners, and communities. The seminar is also part of the series of events for the 86th Anniversary of FIB UI.

The seminar featured three main speakers: Panji Wibisono, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom., Eko Hadi, and Dr. Yeni Budi Rachman, M.Hum. Panji Wibisono, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom. (Young Expert Cultural Steward, Directorate of Film, Music, and Art, Ministry of Culture) discussed efforts in film restoration and audiovisual media conversion as a form of cultural archive preservation. Eko Hadi (Bogor Historia Community) presented the role of the community in documenting local history, particularly in the Bogor region, and building community-based archival awareness. Furthermore, Dr. Yeni Budi Rachman, M.Hum. (Lecturer at DIPI FIB UI) reviewed the crowdsourcing practices carried out by the Sraddha community in Surakarta through the activation of ancient manuscripts as a form of returning knowledge to the public.

The discussion was moderated by Niko Grataridarga, M.Hum., a doctoral student in Information Studies at FIB UI, as well as the Head of Planning & Program Development for the Vocational Program, Universitas Indonesia.

The event was attended by teaching faculty, students, and alumni of DIPI, as well as professional partners from various institutions. The activity was also supported by PT Cipta Tata Dokumen Indonesia, Universitas Indonesia Library, Universitas Indonesia Archive Office, and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia. The seminar served as an important meeting space between academics and communities to develop new understandings regarding archive management and local knowledge based on public participation.

In addition to the seminar session, the event was enlivened by a musical poetry performance and a song dedication from students who are members of the Association of Library Science Students (IMASIP). Furthermore, an archive exhibition from the Universitas Indonesia Archive Office and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia also added to the vibrancy of the event.

The seminar was open to the public and was conducted both offline and via live streaming on the Department of Library and Information Science FIB UI Youtube channel, and was followed by over 250 participants from various regions. The activity involved the active participation of a committee consisting of lecturers, undergraduate students of the Library Science Study Program, master’s students of the Library Science Study Program, and students of the Information Studies Program (S3/Doctoral). This activity also marked a part of the academic event series and a reflection on the long history of the Department of Library and Information Science FIB UI as a pioneer in education and research in the fields of library, archive, and information science in Indonesia.
