FIB UI Improves Health Awareness: Socialization of “Healthy Living to Avoid Cancer” for the Academic Community

The Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI) showed its concern for the health of the academic community by organizing a socialization event entitled “Healthy Living to Avoid Cancer” on July 21, 2025 at the Auditorium Building X. This activity is intended for education staffs, lecturers, and students of FIB UI, as a proactive effort in the prevention and early detection of this deadly disease.

Dr. Junaidi S.S., M.A., Manager of Cooperation and Venture FIB UI, in his speech emphasized the urgency of knowledge about cancer. Cancer is a silent killer, so it is very important for the FIB UI academic community to understand the intricacies of cancer in order to carry out early prevention.

The core session of socialization was delivered by Mr. Joshua Cahyo Mentari, S.K.M. accompanied by Mr. Yasril who represented the Indonesian Cancer Institute. They shared comprehensive information on the definition of cancer, trigger factors, and smart and healthy tips to avoid it.

The in-depth discussion highlighted the fact that cancer often does not show significant symptoms in its early stages, which makes early detection a big challenge. Hence, awareness of the risks and the importance of regular check-ups are strongly emphasized. Specific focus is given to Prostate Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer, given the relevance and urgency of early detection in these types of cancers.

One of the key points highlighted was the link between excess sugar consumption and cancer triggers. It was explained that Indonesians tend to have a high sugar intake, so it is important to know the body’s tolerance limit for sugar, which is normally 50 grams per day.

Cancer prevention also includes adopting a healthy and regular diet, with increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding high-fat foods, carcinogens and preservatives. In addition, regular exercise is also key in maintaining a healthy body.

More interestingly, the speaker also explained some plants and fruits that have the potential to block and deactivate cancer cells. Some of them mentioned as having high efficacy (RIP – Relative Inhibition Potential) are Soursop (35% RIP), Benalu or parasitic plant (50% RIP), and Temu Putih  or Zedoary Turmeric (95% RIP). However, it is important to note that the efficacy is also highly dependent on standardized processing and packaging. For example, if packaged in capsules, it is necessary to ensure that the capsules are made from safe and suitable materials, such as seaweed.

The event closed with a souvenir exchange as a symbol of cooperation and appreciation. FIB UI presented a memento to the Indonesian Cancer Institute, which then reciprocated by giving Temu Putih seeds, a symbol of hope for health and cancer prevention.

This socialization is expected to increase the awareness and knowledge of the FIB UI academic community about cancer, encourage healthy lifestyles, and support early prevention efforts for a healthier future. (Trans-RMRW)
