Strengthening Mandarin Language Assessment through a Training of Trainers Program at the Chinese Studies Program

The Chinese Studies Program, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), offers Mandarin Chinese not only as a communicative skill but also as an academic foundation for the study of Sinology, encompassing linguistics, literature, history, and Chinese culture. In line with the program’s vision to integrate education, research, and the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for the advancement of culture and humanity, the Chinese Studies Program FIB UI invited an expert from South China Normal University (SCNU) to strengthen pedagogical and academic capacity through a Training of Trainers (ToT) program for Chinese Studies lecturers, held on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.

The activity featured Prof. Feng Dongmei, Director of Training, Department of Chinese Language Education, South China Normal University, China, as the speaker, with Hatmi Idris, S.S., M.A. (Lecturer of the Chinese Studies Program) serving as the moderator. The topic, Assessment and Rubrics in Chinese Teaching as a Second Language, focused on the design of assessment systems and evaluation rubrics for teaching Mandarin as a foreign language at the university level. The assessment approach emphasized not only grammatical knowledge and sentence structure but also students’ communicative competence, with discussions

contextualized within the teaching of Chinese I–V courses as the foundation for studies in linguistics, literature, history, and Chinese culture. (CA)
