FIB UI Holds the 2025 International Japanese Studies Research Workshop and Symposium

The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), in collaboration with the Center for Japanese Studies UI and supported by The Japan Foundation, organized the International Japanese Studies Research Workshop and Symposium on 21–22 October 2025. The event carried the theme “Digital Humanities for Japanese Studies in Southeast Asia” and served as the culmination of a series of programs that had been running since July 2025. The preceding activities included an undergraduate research workshop, an online seminar series, and an undergraduate student seminar, and concluded with the international symposium. The main symposium took place over two days at the Building I Auditorium – Toeti Heraty Noerhadi for the keynote and panel sessions, as well as in Room 1101 Smart Classroom and Room 1203.

In this event, nine keynote speakers from seven countries presented their research and engaged in discussions on the role of digital humanities in advancing Japanese studies, particularly in Southeast Asia. The speakers included Prof. Bambang Wibawarta (FIB UI) and Dr. Meta Sekar Puji Astuti (Hasanuddin University) from Indonesia; Prof. Hibi Yoshitaka (Nagoya University) and Prof. Sekino Tatsuki (International Research Center for Japanese Studies—Nichibunken) from Japan; Prof. Jung Byeong Ho (Korea University) from South Korea; Dr. Clay Keller Eaton (National University of Singapore) from Singapore; Dr. Karl Ian Uy Cheng Chua (University of the Philippines Diliman) from the Philippines; Dr. Rohayati Paidi (University of Malaya) from Malaysia; and Dr. Krittaphol Viphaveekul (Chulalongkorn University) from Thailand.

In addition to the plenary sessions, the symposium featured 56 presenters from various higher education institutions in Indonesia and abroad, including participants from the undergraduate workshop. All sessions—both keynote and panel—were moderated by faculty members of the Japanese Studies Program at FIB UI, namely Dr. Dewi Anggraeni, Dr. Lea Santiar, Dr. Rouli Esther, Dr. Himawan Pratama, Aldrie Alman Drajat, M.Hum., and Yulius Thedy, M.Hum.

This international event was held under the coordination of FIB UI’s Manager of Academic Affairs, Rouli Esther, Ph.D., and the Head of the Center for Japanese Studies UI, Himawan Pratama, Ph.D., with full support from the organizing team of FIB UI and PSJ UI. (Trans-CA)
