The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI) held a Postgraduate Public Lecture on Library Science and Information Studies with the theme “Information Studies from an Intelligence and Digital Security Perspective: Strategy, Technology, and Ethics” on Monday, September 15, 2025. The public lecture featured speaker Lt. Col. (P) Bagus Jatmiko, Ph.D. (Head of the Seskoal War Game Center, Cipulir – South Jakarta) and moderator Agustina Setianingrum, S.In., M.Si (Ph.D. student in the Information Studies Program – FIB UI).
The public lecture was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration – FIB UI, Dr. Taufik Asmiyanto, M.Si. In his speech, he mentioned that Information Science is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary field of study, so that research can be conducted using various paradigms and perspectives.
In the lecture, the speaker presented material entitled “Strategy, Technology, and Information Ethics in the Digital Age: An Intelligence and Security Perspective.” The speaker, who is an Indonesian Navy officer and holds a Ph.D. in Information Science from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, was very articulate in presenting material on data and information as the foundation of knowledge; the role of information as the basis for decision making; data and information as strategic resources in the digital age; the connection between these various matters and intelligence, defense, and security practices; opportunities and challenges faced in the digital age; and how to view quadruple helix collaboration opportunities.
The public lecture was not only attended by graduate students and lecturers at FIB – UI, but also by undergraduate students and participants from government agencies. This was evident when a participant from the Indonesian National Armed Forces Maritime Information Center asked the speaker about the confidence level of intelligence from open source data. The speaker responded that the confidence level was “low,” so it was necessary to triangulate with other intelligence sources such as signal intelligence, geospatial intelligence, and even human intelligence, if possible. After the discussion session, the public lecture was then closed with the presentation of certificates to the speakers and moderators. (Trans-RMRW)
