The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI) has once again produced a new doctoral graduate in the field of history. In a doctoral defense held on Monday, June 29, 2026, Dr. Ali Ridho successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled \u201cIdentity Politics and Citizenship: A Study of the Al-Rabithah al-Alawiyah<\/em> and Al-Irsyad<\/em> Organizations in the Colonial Period (1914-1945)\u201d before the board of examiners.<\/p>\n

Through this scholarly milestone, Dr. Ali Ridho not only officially graduated with the distinction of Sangat Memuaskan<\/em> (Very Satisfactory) but also marked his place as the 484th doctoral graduate in History from FIB UI. This achievement also marks him as the second doctoral graduate in history to officially graduate in 2026. Behind this academic success was the guidance of his promoting team consisting of Prof. Dr. Apipudin, S.S., M.Hum. as Promoter, alongside Prof. Yon Machmudi, S.S., Ph.D. and Agus Setiawan, S.S., M.Si., Ph.D. as Co-Promoters. Aside from the promoter team, the open session was led by Dr. Untung Yuwono as the chairperson, while the examination panel was headed by Dr. Linda Sunarti, S.S., M.Hum. Serving as members of the examination team were Prof. Dr. Didin Saepudin, MA., Dr. Abdurakhman, S.S., M.Hum., and Dr. Dwi Mulyatari, S.S., M.A.<\/p>\n

In his research, Dr. Ali Ridho dissected the dynamics of identity politics and citizenship within the Hadhrami Arab community in the Dutch East Indies through the lens of two prominent organizations: Al-Rabithah al-Alawiyah<\/em> and Al-Irsyad<\/em> during the 1914\u20131945 period. Operating under the pressure of colonial segregation laws that categorized them into the Foreign Easterners (Vreemde Oosterlingen) class, this diaspora community faced sharp social polarization and internal friction, particularly regarding the hierarchical social status between the Sayyid and non-Sayyid groups.<\/p>\n

Using a historical-critical approach, this research successfully uncovers that these internal and external tensions did not act as a barrier, but rather as a catalyst for a long process of cultural integration. Global geopolitical shifts, the collapse of the colonial structure, and the transitional phase of power under Japanese military fascism ultimately forced both organizations to reorient their loyalties. The reformist Al-Irsyad<\/em> movement, influenced by Sheikh Ahmad Surkati, continuously championed egalitarian ideas to dismantle the racial-feudal order created by the Dutch. Meanwhile, the traditionalist faction within Rabithah Alawiyah<\/em> gradually underwent structural adaptation to pave the way toward full integration.<\/p>\n

The culmination of this contestation over identity politics found its resolution in the momentum leading up to Indonesian Independence in 1945. The Hadhrami Arab community chose to renounce their ancestral privileges and merged their collective identity into the grand vision of a single citizenship. This authentic synthesis of nationalism was tangibly realized through the Indonesian Arab Party (Persatuan Arab Indonesia<\/em> or PAI) movement led by A.R. Baswedan, which successfully united the reformists’ critical thinking with an inclusive national vision under the banner of Pancasila.<\/p>\n

As a long-term impact of this movement, the diplomatic mission to the Middle East in 1947, led by A.R. Baswedan, successfully consolidated the position of the Arab-Indonesian community. They permanently transformed from colonial subjects into an integral part of the Indonesian nation. Dr. Ali Ridho’s profound study is expected to provide a fresh methodological contribution (novelty) as well as a solid theoretical foundation for Indonesian historiography, particularly in understanding the history of diaspora minority integration within the nation’s overarching independence narrative.
