The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI) has once again produced a new expert in the field of literature. Dr. Minah Febriani Budianto successfully defended her doctoral research before the board of examiners on Monday, July 6, 2026. With this achievement, Dr. Minah Febriani Budianto not only officially earned her doctoral degree with Cum Laude<\/em> honors, but also marked her name as the 494th doctoral graduate in Literature at FIB UI, while concurrently becoming the 13th doctor of literature to graduate from the study program.<\/p>\n

Behind this success was a distinguished team of promoters, consisting of Prof. Manneke Budiman, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., as the Promoter and Nurni Wahyu Wuryandari, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., as the Co-promoter. This milestone was also achieved following an examination before the Board of Examiners, chaired by Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan, Ph.D., with members including Setefanus Suprajitno, Ph.D., Dr. Adi Kristina Wulandari, S.S., M.Hum., Dr. Maria Regina Widhiasti, S.Hum., M.Hum., and Himawan Pratama, S.Hum., M.Si., Ph.D. During the defense, Minah presented her research titled “Reinterpretation of the Collective Memory of the Cultural Revolution in the Films Coming Home<\/em> and One Second<\/em> as Scar Literature Adaptations.” Dr. Minah successfully revealed that film adaptations set during the Cultural Revolution do not merely follow the path of past trauma narratives, which tend to be bleak and fixated on superficial accusations regarding historical violence.<\/p>\n

Instead, the films Coming Home<\/em> (2014) and One Second <\/em>(2020), directed by Fifth-Generation filmmaker Zhang Yimou, introduce significant adjustments that blur the rigid boundaries of past political movements. This shift places a stronger emphasis on the meaning of healing from trauma itself. In the original text, the novel The Criminal Lu Yanshi<\/em>, the narrative is heavily intertwined with the trauma of a totalitarian regime, prompting a rhetorical call to remember historical horrors in order to prevent historical amnesia. A radical transformation occurs when the text is adapted for the silver screen; Coming Home<\/em> softens the tragic conflicts and positions recovery through reconciliation and the adaptive nature of the victim’s family, even though this healing temporarily stagnates due to the character’s amnesia.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, moving into the analysis of One Second, the dynamics of negotiating trauma shift toward a more optimistic direction through substitution strategies. The introduction of new figures or relationships provides a space for victims to accept reality and move forward with their lives in the post-Cultural Revolution era. Beyond the storytelling, which is delivered using a simple and natural “back-to-basics” approach, this research also captures how the rigid grip of the censorship system under the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) propaganda department interferes in determining the boundaries of permissible historical narratives. This is evident in the sudden withdrawal of One Second<\/em> from the Berlin International Film Festival due to content sensitivity.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of her study, Dr. Minah summarized that this series of concepts culminates in the emergence of a “scar narrative”, a gradual transitional process where collective traumatic memories are negotiated as history that must be acknowledged and remembered for the sake of the future. Concurrently, it serves as a memory reconstruction strategy under the scrutiny of the New Era Chinese authorities under the Xi Jinping administration. This in-depth study is expected to provide valuable theoretical contributions to the field of collective memory studies, the intertextual analysis of literature and film, and the understanding of contemporary Chinese cultural dynamics.
