Strengthening Cultural Diplomacy through the Gawi Sia Festival 2025

The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI) took an important part in organizing the Gawi Sia 2025 Cultural Festival, which was held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the East Nusa Tenggara Anjungan, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta. The festival featured colossal Gawi dances and Ende Lio cultural art attractions, which were witnessed directly by the Governor of NTT, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena.

FIB UI’s collaboration with Perkumpulan Wuamesu Indonesia, the Ende Lio diaspora community in Jabodetabek, is a tangible manifestation of the role of higher education in supporting the preservation and promotion of national culture. Through this collaboration, the Dean of FIB UI, Dr. Bondan Kanumoyoso, S.S., M.Hum. emphasized the commitment of the Faculty of Humanities to make culture a bridge between the academic world, the community, and the wider community.

FIB UI’s participation is not only as an organizing partner, but also as a driver of cultural diplomacy. The presence of FIB UI students and academicians in this festival shows how universities can play an active role in reviving traditions and inspiring the younger generation to love Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

In a social media post, the Governor of NTT highlighted the collaboration between FIB UI and Wuamesu as a strategic step to strengthen cultural cooperation between the world of education and regional communities.

Through this activity, FIB UI affirms its position as a faculty that not only studies culture but also presents it directly in the community. This effort is expected to expand cross-cultural understanding while maintaining the sustainability of Nusantara traditions in the modern era. (RMRW)
