The Public Lecture, “Political Liberalization in Taiwan and The Cold War”, was held as a result of the collaboration between FIB UI and TETO

The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia in collaboration with The Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) hosted an online Public Lecture “Political Liberalization in Taiwan and The Cold War” on August 24, 2021. The lecture was delivered by Maeda Naoki, Assistant professor from Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, National Chengchi University, Taiwan (NCCU). The moderator was Nita Madona Sulanti, M.A. from the Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia. This public lecture was attended by 80 participants from Universitas Indonesia, other universities in Indonesia, overseas Universities and a company.

The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Adrianus Laurens Gerung Waworuntu, S.S., M.A., and The Director of Education Division of The Taipei Economic and TradeOffice Indonesia (TETO Indonesia)  Grace Ou delivered opening remarks. The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia said that so far the collaboration has resulted in the opening of “An Introduction to Taiwanese Society and Culture” course which is held annually for third-year students as an elective course. In addition, Faculty of Humanities has also helda public lecture series that presented three experts on Taiwanese society and culture with more than
125 participants joining the events.
Gr ace Ou appreciated Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia's team for all the efforts and supports. She added that Faculty of Humanities and the Education Division of TETO Jakarta have successfully organized variety of events about Taiwan with the vision of providing a clear understanding about Taiwan. The projects included different aspects about the country, including but not limited to culture, literature, society, history, to people around the world. This effort have also allowed them to engage with Indonesian talented youths, for instance in sharing session for students of UI in which students presented topics, she said.

The Dean of FIB UI closed his remark by thanking TETO Jakarta Education Division for the support provided and hoping that the cooperation can continue in the future. Participants of this public lecture came from universities in Indonesia, both public and private, including Maranatha Christian University, Pasundan University, Chandra Kumala School, Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU), Kanaan Global School, Universitas Darma Persada, Institut Teknologi Nasional, and Universitas Sebelas Maret. In addition, there were participants from overseas universities, which were Wuhan University and Eastern University as well as company, namely PT FiberHome
Technologies.

This public lecture is the first in a series of public lectures held with TETO with speakers from NCCU. The following public lecture, “The Historical Development of Taiwanese Identity and Its Related Issues” will be held on September 26, 2021 with Prof. Hsueh Hua -yuan from Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, NCCU, as the speaker.
