FIB UI and RELO held English as Medium of Instruction Workshop

The Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), in cooperation with Regional English Language Office (RELO), U.S. Embassy Jakarta held a workshop on English as Medium of Instruction. This workshop was attended by selected participants, which were lecturers from several universities in Indonesia. This event was held from 9 to 13 July 2019 in Auditorium building IV, FIB UI Depok campus, and led by Heather A. Linville, Ph.D. The workshop was divided into two parts, one for participants from humanities and social sciences background and the other focused on participants from natural sciences background.

This workshop discussed how English has become the number one medium of instruction, beyond the local language, in higher education institutions around the world. At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Ratna Djuwita represented Universitas Indonesia, delivered a welcoming remark, while RELO was represented by Dr. Bradley Horn.

Heather A. Linville, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Director of the TESOL and Early Childhood to Adolescent Education Programs at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. She was also a former English language fellow at FIB UI. Her research explores how teachers act as advocates for English Learners (Els) and how personal, experiential, and contextual factors influence advocacy beliefs and actions.
