FIB UI Bekerjasama dengan RELO Mengembangkan Modul Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Online

Bekerjasama dengan Regional English Language Office, Kedutaan Amerika Serikat (AS), FIB UI menyelenggarakan pelatihan bertema “MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Development Team Indonesian E-Teacher Alumni Project”. Para peserta pelatihan ini merupakan dosen-dosen senior dari berbagai daerah dan kota di Indonesia seperti Aceh, Batam, Jogjakarta, Surabaya, Bali,  Banjarmasin, Makassar, Ambon dan Watampone, yang sebelumnya adalah penerima beasiswa E-Teacher Program dari Kedutaan AS. Di program beasiswa tersebut, mereka telah berkesempatan untuk mengikuti salah satu kelas jarak jauh yang ada di University of Oregon. Dalam kelas online tersebut, para penerima beasiswa, yang juga sebagian besar adalah kepala program studi Inggris di universitasnya, mendalami topik-topik mutakhir dalam bidang Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing bersama dengan ahli bahasa Inggris dari Amerika Serikat. Selama program tersebut, mereka juga telah dilatih untuk menggunakan teknologi terkini yang dirancang secara khusus untuk proses belajar jarak-jauh yang telah dikembangkan di Amerika.

Dalam pelatihan yang diadakan dari tanggal 28 hingga 30 Mei di Hotel Akmani Jakarta, para alumni beasiswa E-Teacher mempelajari dan mengembangkan lima online modules dengan dipandu oleh Debra Lee yang merupakan tenaga ahli bahasa Inggris dari RELO dan Santi B. Lestari dari FIB UI. Selama 3 hari tersebut, dilatih untuk menggunakan berbagai aplikasi dan e-learning software, serta menyusun modul secara sistematis dan holistik yang mencakupi literasi digital, belajar mandiri, perangkat mobile, penggunaan video dan kreasi video.

Media pembelajaran online merupakan area yang potensial dan banyak diperlukan, namun masih belum tereksplorasi dan dikembangkan dengan baik di Indonesia, baik dari segi fasilitas maupun kapasitas pengajar dan pelajarnya. Oleh karena itu, selain memberikan materi tentang penggunaan teknologi dan pembuatan video digital, pelatihan I-MOOC ini juga menitikberatkan pentingnya menumbuhkan prilaku mandiri serta inisiatif tinggi pada diri pelajar dalam kegiatan belajar mereka sehari-harinya. Setelah pelatihan selama tiga hari tersebut, peserta akan kembali ke universitas asal masing-masing, mengembangkan modul selama sembilan bulan ke depan. Penggarapan MOOC ini merupakan yang pertama di Indonesia dan diharapkan I-MOOC atau Indonesian MOOC ini dapat diakses oleh masyarakat Indonesia yang tertarik untuk menggunakan berbagai media dan teknologi pengajaran yang sudah dikembangkan oleh ahli-ahli terbaiknya.

FIB UI Develops Online English Learning Modul in Collaboration with RELO

 FIB UI teamed up with the Regional English Language Office of US Embassy to organise a 3-day workshop with the theme “MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Development Team Indonesian E-Teacher Alumni Project”. The participants of the workshop were senior lecturers from various universities in Indonesia, ranging from Aceh, Batam, Jogjakarta, Surabaya, Bali,  Banjarmasin, Makassar, Ambon and Watampone, who had previously been awarded the E-Teacher Scholarship Program from the US Embassy. In the scholarship program, they had been given opportunities to join one of the distant courses conducted by the University of Oregon. Some of the sholarship recipients are also the Head of English Language Program at their home universities and during the online course they explored current topics in English as a Foreign Language Teaching guided by American language experts. They also had managed to learn and practice using state-of-the-art technology specifically designed and developed in the US for online/ distant learning.

In the workshop which was held from 28 to 30 May 2016 at The Akmani Hotel Jakarta, the E-Teacher Scholarship alumni carefully studied and developed modules for online learning, directed by the language experts from RELO, Debra Lee, and Santi B. Lestari from FIB UI. For three days they were trained to utilise various applications and e-learning softwares whilst constructing the modules systematically and hollistically, incorporating digital literacy, autonomous learning, mobile devices, video use and video creation.

Online learning is a potential area for innovation as there has been a substantial increasing demand of it for the past few years. Nevertheless, the field has been rather unexplored and underdeveloped, both in terms of the number of facilities available and teachers as well as students’ capacities. For that reason, apart from the information and instructions on how to use certain technology and digital video making, the I-MOOC workshop also emphasises on the importance of developing students’ sense of awareness and understanding about self-directed learning. After the 3-day workshop, the participants return to their home universities and further develop the modules for the next nine months. This project is the first MOOC development in Indonesia and it is expected that this I-MOOC, which stands for Indonesian MOOC, can be accessed by the wider Indonesian society who are interested to utilise various media and technologies in their online learning activities, with modules put together by the top English language experts in the archipelago.
